Asphalt pavement gives the best return on investment of any paving material
When appropriately designed, constructed and maintained, an asphalt pavement will never need to be fully removed and replaced. According to German regulation RPE Stra 01 replacement is required only for maintenance of the wearing course (on average every 16-22 years) and the binder course (on average every 28 years) to a depth of only 4 to maximum 12 cm depending on the type of asphalt and the traffic volume. Most of the asphalt pavement structure itself will last indefinitely, so its value will also last indefinitely (> 50 years). On the contrary, for concrete pavements the whole concrete layer up to 29 cm has to be completely renewed after an average service life of 28 years.

The digital transformation of Industry, also known as Industry 4.0, refers to a series of smart and autonomous systems fuelled by big data, machine learning, artificial intelligence, blockchain, internet of things (IoT), etc. with the capacity to significantly push forward the efficiency, productivity, quality, reliability, and sustainability of a given industrial sector. In this second video of the EAPA Series “Generation Asphalt”, EAPA Technical Director Breixo Gomez explains how these digital innovations are used in the asphalt paving sector, through the concept of Asphalt 4.0.
