Za doseganje obstojnih, stroškovno učinkovitih in trajnostnih cest je potrebno uporabljati debeline vozišča, ki ustrezajo prometu in klimatskim razmeram.

V Belgiji je na glavni avtocesti (razred B1) debelina betonske in asfaltne ceste podobna, v primeru cest nižjega razreda (razred B5 in celo B9) pa so velike razlike. Na betonskem vozišču ni debelina konstrukcije nikoli manj od 180 mm, medtem ko se v primeru asfalta lahko bodisi v fazni gradnji ali v primeru cest nižjega ranga uporabi nižji minimum.

Increases in the European road freight transport, vehicles weight and frequency of extreme climatic events are deteriorating the European road network at an anomalously fast rate, bringing it close to the end of its service life and requiring more frequent maintenance operations.
